OS1 recreates the working relationship from the film Her as running software. Built on OpenAI's open-source Codex agent runtime, it pairs a continuous voice conversation with an agent that operates visible software alongside you.

The first application is Letter Writer. The whole path works today: you speak, a handwritten letter appears on screen, and you revise it together through conversation. Sending and printing are not built yet. The project runs as a friends preview behind an invite waitlist.

Nearby is a three-year map of where I have been. Dragging the timeline shows moves between cities. People I met in person cluster on an inner ring, chat contacts sit on an outer ring, and ties in other cities point outward as dashed rays.

It borrows anthropologist Xiang Biao’s idea of “the nearby” — migration loosens old ties while a new nearby slowly forms. My city trail is complete. People are incomplete: initials and city centers only, and only when I can place them.

A vintage rotary telephone rewired as a physical interface to an agent. Lifting the handset starts a voice session; as you talk, the agent writes a letter on screen in real time. Built on ESP32 hardware, with a recent experiment adding a thermal printer that prints short fortune slips. It is a working device made for live, in-person demos — not a product.

Hao Lab is my studio in a former classroom near Liangzhu, Hangzhou, wired as a living experiment: cameras, microphones, environmental sensors, and repurposed phones sharing one space with agents. It tests what daily life is like when machine perception and action extend beyond a single screen. An earlier phase was shown to about twenty visitors at an open day in March 2026.

I emptied the physical space when I moved to the Bay Area in July 2026. The system now centers on a portable Mac hub and the reused devices that travel with me.
